Collaborating to transform through sustainable management of our products
At Inditex, we are keenly aware of the importance of offering our customers sustainable products. Sustainable product management is foundational to the transformation of our sector. We view circularity as a very important enabler of genuine industry transformation and we are collaborating with numerous parties on that transition.
We use the Care for Fiber label for garments produced using raw materials from more sustainable sources, such as organic cotton or recycled fibres, among others.
Garments produced using technologies that reduce water usage in their production processes. The garment dyeing and washing processes use the largest amounts of water. The use of closed cycles that allow for water reuse or technologies, such as ozone or cold pad batch help us to preserve freshwater resources.
Articles produced using processes that help reduce emissions and/or the use of chemical products in production processes. The use of technologies such as renewable energy consumption or have been certified by Leather Working Group enable us to carry out washing, dyeing or tanning processes in a more sustainable way.
Our Join Life label allows us to flag the products in which we use raw materials from more sustainable sources and more environmentally-friendly production processes. Moreover, our Join Life products can only be made by our highest-rated suppliers (A or B certification) on our social and environmental standards or suppliers that demonstrate a strong commitment to improving by promising to execute a corrective action plan.
At our Annual General Meeting in July 2021, we announced our target of having 50% of the articles we put on sale carry our Join Life label in 2022, which is significantly more ambitious than our last target (25% Join Life in 2020). In 2021, 47% of our products already carried that label.
Collaborating to be circular
We are transitioning to a circular business model in which waste gets transformed into new raw materials. That strategy is reducing our impact via the consumption of natural resources and unlocking water and energy savings.
Design and selection of materials
We are working to be able to offer top-quality, healthy, safe and sustainable products. Our designers are increasingly using more sustainable raw materials to maximise our products’ life cycle, prolong their durability and facilitate their recycling.
Product health and safety
We have proprietary standards for ensuring that all our products comply with the most stringent health, safety and environmental protection legislation.
